A CUB scout group leader is calling for help to put together an exhibition celebrating more than 100 years of scouting.

Rob Richards has been involved with the 1st Great Harwood parish group for around a year as assistant leader, and is set to take over as leader in September.

The group has been running for more than 100 years, and to mark the anniversary Mr Richards is searching for images and memorabilia from its history.

He said he would like to be able to create an exhibition with the memorabilia found.

The 39-year-old from Great Harwood said: “It should really help with the club as a whole.

“The history will show where the group has came from and how far it’s come.

“It’s the oldest group in Great Harwood.

“It should bring back some memories, scouting means a lot of things to a lot of people.

“We want to be able to create a pictorial history and build up an exhibition.”

The group currently has 18 members in beavers and cubs, and is hoping to soon re-establish a scout group.

Mr Richards estimates the amount of young people who came through the group since it formed in 1913 would ‘be in the thousands’.

So far images have been collected from the 1980s, as well as registration documents dating back to its formation.

He has also located a Elsie Barlow cup, which was used for scouting in the 1980s, and is appealing for help to find the backstory behind it.

He is also looking to find three other scouting trophies.

Mr Richards said he still thinks scouting is popular and has a bright future.

The father-of-two said: “It’s very inclusive and keeps on growing.

“It’s got so many good things, it gives young people a chance to go out and meet others.

“We’re constantly holding meetings to find out what kids want to do, and we’ve got technology badges.

“But a lot of it, teamwork, adventure, the skills, the chance to go outside and get muddy and wet, are still want kids want.”

The 1st Great Harwood parish group meets on Thursday’s at St Bartholomew’s CE Primary School in Ash Street.

Beavers meet at 6pm and Scouts meet from 7pm until 8.30pm.
