HYNDBURN MP Graham Jones has said the announcement of plans to close Great Harwood police station mark a ‘bad day’ for policing in the area.

Speculation about its future arose earlier this month after it was temporarily closed.

Last week, Lancashire Police announced it would be closing the station in Hesketh Street from July 10.

Mr Jones said: “With deep government cuts to Lancashire constabulary’s budget, they have taken the regrettable decision to not continue the lease.

“This is a bad day for policing in Great Harwood and the government must now explain why this has been allowed to happen.”

Lancashire Police said they are no longer renewing the lease after taking a decision some time ago that the premises were ‘underutilised and no longer fit for purpose’.
