PROBLEMS with parking in a Great Harwood street could be a thing of the past.

Residents in Spring Avenue have been campaigning to improve parking conditions in the street over the last few years.

They said a lack of spaces led to some inconsiderate motorists to park on the pavement, obstructing homes and blocking passers-by.

In a letter to householders on the street, Cllr Gareth Molineux said: "I have stated in the past the county council has no legal requirement to provide parking.

"This has always been a stumbling block when trying to get a satisfactory resolution.

"However, by working with Hyndburn Council colleagues, I have been successful in applying for a grant to remove the raised beds and reinstate parallel parking.

"This will create around 12 new spaces."

The residents were told a required consultation period would start, and that not every resident may be happy about the plans to remove the flower beds.

Cllr Molineux said: "Therefore I would be interested to hear any alternative suggestions when the consultation takes place.

"I have been contacted as to why I would refuse to install bollards on the path and I would like to clarify why I would not support this.

"Bollards, in my opinion, would only serve to move the problem to another street."
