A PENSIONER has died after she was knocked down by a 32 ton truck.

Jenny Clarkson, 80, of Canal Street,Clayton-le-Moors, was crossing at traffic lights on the A680 Whalley Road junction near the Hare and Hounds pub, when she was struck by the tipper wagon at 4pm, police said.

The impact caused 'extremely severe' injuries to both of her legs, and she was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

An air ambulance also attended, but her injuries were considered too severe to risk moving her into the helicopter.

She underwent several hours of emergency surgery to her legs but later died.

Sergeant Pete Sculpher from the road policing unit said: "We are still in the early stages of investigating this incident.

"Thankfully several witnesses, both pedestrians and motorists, have come forward and we will be interviewing them to gather all the information we can, but if there any other witnesses who can help we would urge them to come forward."

Sgt Sculpher added that the driver of the truck, a 44-year-old man from Burnley, was too shocked by the incident to be interviewed immediately.

The truck belongs to Percliff Plant Hire, Philips Road, Blackburn,

"He is in deep shock, so we will wait until all the other evidence has been collected before speaking to him," he said.

Police closed Whalley Road towards Rishton for over two hours whilst the accident was investigated, causing rush hour traffic chaos in the area, with queues of traffic backing up to junction seven of the M65.

Any witnesses can contact the police on 01254 353210 or 01254 51212

The death of Mrs Jenny Clarkeson is an awful tradgedy and a sad loss to a very close knit community. My heart felt sympathy goes out to her family at this sad time.
I would also like to spare a thought for the driver who was involved in the unfotunate tragedy who will have to live with this on his conscience for the rest of his life whether he's at fault or not.
Accidents of this nature are hard to comprehend and we all look for something or someone to blame, in this case most people will point the finger at the driver of the truck. There are a huge number of heavy goods vehicles and tipper wagons that use Whalley road to which ive witnessed them going over the speed limit on many occasion. My point being that car drivers are also guilty of exceeding the speed limit on that particular stretch of road.In this case its not about the speed of vehicles, it boils down to the positioning of the crossing, combination of the sequence of the timing of traffic lights, enabling pedestrians to cross the road safely.I would consider my partner as an excellent lorry driver but this awful tragedy could have quite easily have happened to him of which he agrees.

Firstly I'd like to echo the other replies and offer sympathy to the family. That juction, to be brutally honest, was an accident waiting to happen, and it's an absolute tragedy that someone had to get killed before action is taken. The trouble with crossing there, is that you have to come round the corner to a certain degree to cross and so you can't always see traffic coming from Accrington. There were people working at the junction this morning so let's hope they're doing something constructive. I would also echo Trevor's comments about the speed of vehicles going down Blackburn road... I've lived just off Blackburn road for Seven years and this is the 4th accident I've seen , and my property has been on the receiving end of one of them. I HATE speed cameras with a passion, but maybe it's time they Sited one here.

Think the way traffic goes on that junction is all wrong. why do cars traveling from clayton have right of way to cars traveling from accrington towards rishton? when they already have a filter arrow its just take your chances and hope for best most of the time on that junction.Cars a lot of time dont bother to indicate when coming from accrington because if they do car across cuts infront and sometimes get stuck for ages waiting for traffic to stop traveling from clayton onto blackburn rd. something needs doing quickly, this poor woman has payed with her life

Condolances to her family first and foremost. I live on Blackburn Road, and many vehicles, car, van, and truck alike, speed along the road at all times of day and night down the hill from Clayton to towards Rishton and the M65 motorway. The traffic lights are also a cause for concern, particularly when turning downhill. A better system of traffic filters and something to slow down, or even better reduce the amount of, traffic in this area must be urgently investigated.

condolences to the family.

however i dont think its the drivers fault unless he ran a red light. maybe pedestrians should cross the road more carefully. not just expect traffic to a) see you and b)be in a position to stop.

First of all my thoughts and prayers go out to this lady and her family, R.I.P

Right Martin, i take your comments personally because I am a wagon driver and you have stated "they have no consideration for other road users" I take it by that statement you are critical of all wagon drivers. This accident could easily have been a car or a van, would you have made that statement then?? I know that there are a lot of idiotic wagon drivers out there but there are also just as many if not more idiotic car drivers out there causing accidents each and every day. I'm interested to know what changes you would make to prevent accidents like this one???

I was on a bus in the traffic not far from the junction at the time. Everyone on the bus was concerned for the person involved. Im sure they are all as sad as me. My thoughts go out to the lady's family.

I am really sorry to hear that the lady involved with the accident hasnt made it, it is about time the council & goverment do something about that stretch of road, its a shame its taken this for things to happen. The junction were it happend has always been dodgy, drivers just dont seem to care, they speed, dont stop or indicate at that junction as you cant see cars coming from Accrington who may be turning down Blackburn Rd.My sincere condolences go to the family of the lady involved. CHANGES NEED TO BE ACTIONED IE; YESTERDAY!!!!!!!!
