A ‘WACKY’ racing team pulled out all the stops ahead of their return this weekend to the Red Bull Soapbox Race 2017.

Staff from the Cardboard Box Company in Clayton-le-Moors have created the ‘Notorious Low Rider’ and hope to wow the competition’s 20,000 spectators with their creation on Sunday.

The vehicle, designed to look like the Lego Joker car, has taken the best part of 150 hours and more than £1,000 to create.

The team made up of four employees from Petre Road company have used cardboard, paper and steel to create their vehicle.

The event at Alexandra Palace in London is a gravity-powered race, which involves three out of four team members pushing a homemade vehicle down a ramp.

The aim is to ensure the vehicle reaches the bottom of the ramp in one piece.

More than 3,000 teams applied to take part in the race with only 70 chosen to take part.

The Cardboard Box Company’s team includes Lee Mansfield, 37, Sheere Scholes, 27, along with brothers Kristian and Nathan Howson.

But for Kristian, 37, and Nathan, 25, it will not be the first time the pair have competed in the race.

Mr Howson, who took part two years ago, said: “Last time we looked great but we had technical problems and basically the wheels fell off.

“Most teams just end up crashing.

“We aim to do better this weekend.

“We are also keeping the Lego theme we had from last year, with the Lego Batman movie being such a hit this year.

“This time the Lego Joker is taking the wheel, to prove his dominance over Batman.”

Mr Howson said their efforts even caught the attention of the director of the Lego Batman Movie, Chris McKay, after he tweeted him a picture of the car.

He said: “I want us to finish on the podium this year.

“My main concern is the weather, which is forecast to rain, with it being made out out cardboard.

“If it does there’s a fair chance it will look like paper machete.”

Racers who make it onto the podium can win prizes such as general admission tickets to a Red Bull event and a tour around the Red Bull Racing Factory.

The Red Bull Soapbox Race will be broadcast live on Dave this Sunday from 5pm.
