A NUTRITIONIST from Clayton-le-Moors who helped Team GB’s women’s hockey team to triumph in Rio has told youngsters to ‘do anything to pursue your dream’.

Emma Gardner, who was born and raised in the town, was part of the team behind the gold medal winners, who knocked out the Netherlands in a penalty shootout.

She flew to Rio on July 17 and was one of the nutritionists for the whole Team GB camp, before meeting up with the hockey team during the quarter finals on August 5.

Ms Gardner said that growing up in East Lancashire ‘played a big part’ in making her sporting dreams come true.

“I grew up pretty much opposite Wilson’s Playing Field and never thought I’d do something outside the town or in a national team.

“East Lancashire definitely played a big part in me finding my passion in sport.

“Wherever you live, whether it’s Rishton, Accrington or Clayton-le-Moors, there’s always lots of sports you can take part in.”

Her roles as nutritionist involve setting diets, ensuring fitness is maintained and preventing illnesses.

The 30-year-old said: “Diet is of course incredibly important to athletes, and over the last few years nutrition has become so much more advanced.

“Another big part of my role in Team GB is ensuring the athletes don’t become ill and remain fit during training.”

She now divides her time spending two days a week with Northampton Saints RFC and three days a week with Team GB’s hockey team in Bisham Abbey.

She said: “I did my degree in sports and exercise science at Birmingham University before completing a masters in Nutrition. The time I spent in education has really paid off.

“My mentor Mark Ellison, a boxing coach from Sheffield, taught me that anyone can pursue their dream in sport, just make sure it’s something you can enjoy wholeheartedly then it doesn’t feel like work at all. Do anything to pursue your dream and you will be happy.”
