SCORES of Lancashire roads were brought to a standstill yesterday as heavy snowfalls blighted the region.

Worst affected was the Haslingden Grane Road which was closed both ways from around mid afternoon onwards as a result of compacted snow along its entire stretch.

Its closure led to long tailbacks on the M65 at junction five where it meets the Grane Road at Guide.

A Lancashire police spokesman said: “We were informed at around 3.40pm that the Grane Road had become impassable because of compacted snow on the road and Lancashire County Council took the decision to close it.”

Police said that two buses had become stranded on the road as the snow fell about 3.30pm and 14 passengers had to be ferried back to Haslingden by police.

The snow also wrought havoc with bus services in Burnley and Pendle and several were cancelled or seriously affected.

The 106 bus was cancelled because of snow-bound roads in the Cog Lane area of Burnley and the 111 and 112, linking Harle Syke and Nelson, suspended.

The Mainline services to and from Clitheroe were not picking up in Sabden and the buses between Burnley, Padiham and Accrington were not stopping off in Huncoat.

A Burnley and Pendle Travel spokesman said bulletins would be updated today as weather and road conditions dictated.

There were also a series of minor bumps caused by the bad weather as drivers struggled with the deteriorating weather conditions.

Emergency crews had to attend a multi vehicle pile up in Manchester Road, Burnley, just after 3pm as cars skidded on the snow covered road.

In Accrington at around the same time a female driver suffered minor injuries when her 4x4 overturned in Wilpshire Road.

Fire crews were called but the woman had been helped out of the vehicle by two passers-by. She was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

And in Darwen at 3pm three cars collided with each other in Pole Lane.

A male driver was treated for minor injuries and the other drivers and passengers escaped unhurt.
