A COUNCILLOR has blasted Lancashire County Council for ‘substandard’ pothole repairs in Belthorn Leader of the opposition at Hyndburn Council, Peter Britcliffe, reported several problems to the council, including ‘poor quality’ repairs to potholes, and excessive moss, in Rydal Mount, and ‘cracking’ road at the bottom of Rydal Mount, and Belthorn Road.

But an officer from the county council said repairs on the roads were adequate, and there ‘were no defects’.

Jean Bain, from Belthorn Village Committee, said: “Potholes in Rydal Mount have been inspected, but not filled in, as the team carrying out the inspection is keeping them under review. This is due to the depth of the potholes, stating they do not fulfil criteria warranting their repair.”

Mrs Bain added that, despite council workers jetwashing the moss, it was still a problem, and residents could not use the footpath when it was wet for fear of slipping.

Principal engineer for Hyndburn and Rossendale local network management, Ray Bennett, said: “We will continue to monitor any defects that are present, and action repairs on reaching the intervention levels.”

But Coun Britcliffe said: “I can’t believe substandard work is acceptable. Surely it is more expensive long term to have inferior work.

2A waste of council tax payers’ money I would say.”
