Jobs axed at Holland's Pies

HOLLAND’S Pies has axed a clutch the jobs following a multi-million pound takeover.

The 10 roles were cut just weeks after parent company Northern Foods was acquired by tycoon Ranjit Boparan in a £342million deal.

Already Boparan, owner of Harry Ramsden’s fish and chip shops, has begun making changes at Northern, including closing the firm’s Leeds HQ and shifting staff elsewhere.

Bosses said the measures were necessary to ensure Holland’s remained competitive.

But it has led to some concern about the firm, which has been based in Blackburn Road, Baxenden, for more than 100 years.

Several years ago Northern bosses plotted to switch production to Ireland but eventually shelved the plan.

The new bosses have said there are no plans to move from the Hyndburn village.

But Terry Hurn, who represents Baxenden on Hyndburn Council, said there was concern in the community.

He said: “The news coming out of Holland’s worries me, especially given what else is happening within Northern Foods.

“These job losses are concerning and the idea of Holland’s no longer being a Lancastrian company does not bear thinking about.”

Last month, Holland’s managing director Ed Hyslop left the business amid Boparan’s corporate restructure.

It leaves the site without an overall boss, although Northern has stressed that the plant has several on-site managers who ensure things run smoothly.

The 10 axed jobs were all manufacturing roles.

Holland’s said the redundancies meant the company could remain ‘more efficient and competitive’ and only three of the 10 were axed compulsorily.

A spokesman added: “These redundancies, while regrettable, are a necessary part of ensuring Holland’s remains competitive in the marketplace.”

What is this country coming to ? Is evrything owned by bl**dy foreigners ?
Is the permanent government trying to ensure that NOTHING here is owned by Brits ?
And if so, why ?
I reckon it's to ensure there is no serious trade union influence ( copyright, M. Thatcher ).
I fear for our children and grandchildren, I really do.

The bosses said "There are no plans to move from the Hyndburn village." Maybe no plans to move today, but I can't trust them in the longer term. When the bottom line on their balance sheet is all they care about, they expect total loyalty from their workers, but offer not one ounce of loyalty in return. If they can save a few quid they will be gone in a heart beat!

Loyalty to a company is worth nothing, sadly i fear Hollands pies will be relocated elsewhere. anybody who thinks this will have an adverse affect on their sales/profits will be sadly mistaken. Remember what happened to the oxo factory in Gt harwood. we still buy the products. I am afraid workers count for now't these days. not much noise from the so called unions.

Mark my words ladies and gentlemen.
This is just the start. The day it was announced who had taken over Northern Foods, I forecast that was the beginning of the end for Hollands.

I agree, had to throw out the last lot of Hollands pies I bought, more gristle than meat, they were awful.

Why should you expect quality? The people who are dominating all our industry are all about short cuts, poor quality and maximum return. They achieve this because plonkers still purchase their stuff. I haven't had a Hollands pie in years. I wont boost profits of potential terrorists. If you pay money into their businesses you have no idea what you are helping to fund because they are underhand and cannot be trusted, not to mention they turn quality into sh*** where ever they go.

Holland's cheese and onion pies are delicious.
But if the damned foreigners who now own Hollands decide to "transfer" production to Poland or Estonia or wherever, I will never buy another one.

What I would like to know, and I am aware that new owners are Indian, but will this be another move towards the Halalization of British food. I will also state that Holand's are now off my shopping list , be it via shop, supermarket or chipshop. It is only till everyone takes a similar stance that we as consumers can dictate what we want from the owners. If we all sit back and so nothing then we deserve to have our traditional manufacturers go to the wall.
