Burglar jailed for raid on new mum's Baxenden home

A NEW mum's Baxenden home was raided hours after she brought her daughter home from hospital.

Burnley Crown Court heard the victim told police the conservatory where Barry Gibbons and two accomplices entered was full of balloons and cards to welcome the newborn.

Gibbons, 21, who had been in the area looking for alloy wheels to steal, ended up being part of the attack on the house in Southwood Drive, after claiming one of his friends started trying door handles.

The defendant, who is about to finish a five-month jail term, was given another 15 months, after admitting burglary following the incident last January and failing to surrender.

His two co-defendants had earlier been given nine months and 18 months behind bars by another judge. Judge Beverley Lunt slammed the sentences as 'ludicrously short', but said she had to be fair to the defendant.

The judge told Gibbons, of Bishop Street, Rochdale, she hoped he had reflected on how he had ruined what should have been a joyous occasion for the young family.

She said: "The terror and the fear they must have felt will never leave them."

"When you come out of custody I hope you will start growing up."

Sarah Statham, prosecuting, said the burglars stole a lot electrical equipment, including a large television. The victims were in bed and were not disturbed. Neighbours saw lights on in the family's car and alerted police.

Officers caught Gibbons and his accomplices nearby in their vehicle, which they had driven from Rochdale. The defendant was at the wheel.

Gareth Dawson, for Gibbons, said at the time there had been few positives in his life.

Gibbons had had time to reflect and planned a more positive life and lifestyle after his release, Mr Dawson said.

Get them in a room. Bolt and padlock it. The victims were in bed and not disturbed. Oh, that's okay then!

Lock them in a room somewhere, subject the to the same fear, terror as they've subjected the victims to in this case. Let them experience first hand their actions, then let THEM have some of the life lasting effects they dish out to others.

'More positive life and lifestyle' after his release. Pull the other one. It beggars belief these scum get away with this time after time after time.

'Fair to the defendant?' My God! What about the victims of these scum?? What FAIRNESS do they receive? No, they live with these scars life long. They don't go away. But the scum walks free, without any kind of remorse. Lock them up and make sentences count! The public is utterly sick to death of reading about how 'fair' these sentences are to these criminals. They have a choice in life - to act decently or become a criminal. Quite simply, it's a choice. No one elses fault, no one made them do it. They decided to do it all by themselves.

You know, one day soon this country is going to explode because people are pushed to limits, the touch paper is there waiting. But it'll explode and God help these scum when it does! Because people will find you and hound you until you leave us all alone! Good riddens! Because the justice system isn't going to help getting rid of them. Never fear the 'apologists' for them will be along soon no doubt. Except it's not YOU normally who has been victim or lives in neighborhoods where this is common. Sure if it was you'd soon change your tune on the matter.

How much fairness do victims of crime get?

That has got to be a wind up!!! Lancashire's most notoriously lenient judge critising a short sentence. Priceless!!!

Totally agree SOF. That Lunt woman has been a joke for years. Perhaps at last she's been burgled, & finally come to her senses.
