Police name and shame burglars after 100 caught in East Lancs blitz

POLICE today unveiled a “rogues’ gallery” of 18 burglars jailed as part of a huge crackdown that has seen sentences totalling more than 200 years handed out.

And officers have warned other house raiders: ‘you’ve got nowhere to hide’.

More than 100 burglars from across East Lancashire have been convicted and sentenced this year, receiving an average sentence of around two years in prison.

And today police have taken the unusual step of providing the Lancashire Telegraph with mugshots of those most recently convicted.

They hope this action will both name and shame the burglars and deter others from committing the crime.

Chief Inspector Damian Darcy said: “Even though burglaries are at a 35 year all-time low, we are committed to reducing burglaries even further.

“It has a significant impact on victims, their families and the wider community.

“Burglaries make people feel less safe. That is unacceptable.

"The only people who should be in fear is those people who commit them.

“We target burglars 365 days a year 24/7. Every offence is robustly investigated.

"Burglars have two choices: stop now or you will be caught and face the consequences.

"Our message to them is clear: we know who you are and we know where you live.”

The warnings come after Operation Julius, an ongoing campaign to reduce burglary across Lancashire.

In Eastern division, covering Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley, there were 65 arrests made during July, £82,100 of stolen property recovered, 877 visits and warnings made, 509 stop and search checks carried out, 27 search warrants executed, 13 vehicles seized and 91 visits to second hand shops made.

In Pennine division, covering Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale, there were 56 arrests made during the month, £55,820 of stolen property recovered, 919 visits and warnings made, 2,113 stop and search checks carried out, 41 search warrants executed, 21 vehicles seized and 96 visits to second hand shops.

Throughout July, officers carried out high profile patrols and activity to target known offenders.

Senior police officers in East Lancashire have personally visited those suspected of being the most prolific burglars.

This week officers in Burnley will “lockdown” burglary hot-spots.

Individual streets where suspected burglars are known to either live, visit or operate will be subject to a 24 hour lockdown.

Superintendent Sarah Oldham, of the Pennine Division, said: “We need the public’s assistance to keep crime low.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0845 1 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Just wait now for one of these human rights organisations to get wind of this and everyone named and shamed will be getting a bumper payout for Lancashire Police hurting their feelings by printing the pics in the Telegraph!
Commendable that such a robust attitude is being taken towards a very upsetting crime -- we need more of this and more bobbies fit for the job not ones that bow to government set targets.
Can we start naming and shaming sex offenders please so we/our kids can all be a bit safer.....

Problem is we pay for these low-lifes either way. Outside of prison we pay for their benfits and housing and we then pay when they're in the prison.

I'm sick of my taxes going to pay for these people who will never contribute a penny.

Ship them off to remote island somewhere and let them burgle each other.

Very strange. When I was a lad (admittedly some time ago!!) Walmsley Street, Laurel Avenue, Perry Street were all well respected areas. I knew Civil Servants who lived in Laurel Avenue and my old schoolmaster - also a respected Councillor, then Alderman - yes they were respected in those days, lived in Anyon Street. We have had two attempted burglaries in our lifetime - not very pleasant particularly when the police call and dust all over for fingerprints. However, good hunting boys and may you be ever more successful. I laughed the other day - one bright spark in Darwen Town Centre always looked "cocky" and "loud" suddenly appeared pushing a pram with what I expect he would call a "babby" I expect that will calm him down a bit!!

Sometimes I don't believe what I read on these boards.

In 14 posts there's been calls for castration, sharia law, amputation,
transportation and quite amazingly,
sterilisation.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for justice but this stuff is extreme! What happened to rehabilitation and punishments that fit the crime??

What you people are advocating is a return to the 18th century where the justice of the day demanded that we hung starving people for stealing bread.

I wonder if you'd be so keen for these punishments if it was your relatives/friends who commited a crime?

This plod is living on another planet; His home office stats. may say what he says, but even he should know his political masters are useing him to spin their false propaganda.

Look at your own records Chief Inspector, that is if you know where they are! Start at the Collators Office, or even (pray God) talk to the public you're charged with protecting, or your own Officers working at the 'sharp end'

And to you 'nice one sunshine' you're either a criminal or you've never been a victim of these lowlife scumbags.

You are SO thick. The gear doesn't come from the middle east. It comes from Afghanistan.

The taliban had been credited for stopping the production of heroin but since the british/american invasion and the outing of the taliban the production of heroin has increased ten-fold. FACT.

Rayzer, i honestly dont think ive ever heard anyone so narrow minded. Your probably one of them that wears the poppy with pride, but then spouts off the kind of far right rhetoric that our servicemen and women fought to get rid of.

And for those that talk of chopping hands off, if that really worked there would be no crime rate at all in the countries that practised that, just like if the death penalty worked, then the USA would be one of the safest countries in the world.

A society without crime is an impossible dream, its how we deal with the cause and effect that is important...you can judge how civilized a society is based on its penal system. For the moment we are ok, but god help us if anyone like rayzer was ever to get in power.

I was lucky enough to visit Dubai in the 1970s. It was a time of development on a large scale with a lot of Brits earning big money there. One night a resident Indian who I was working with offered to take me to a large store. I was amazed to see the Brits with their kids buying the most expensive toys whilst on open display without protection of any kind, gold wrist watches, gold cigarette lights, superb pen sets etc. I asked my colleague how it was possible to display the material so openly and what was the rate of theft in the UAE. He said "Very little theft" and made a gesture of a hand being cut off!! So it was not a myth I assure you. Some strong action is needed - what a shock it would be if the "cat" was reintroduced or the stocks - only joking but the magistrates are far too lenient in the sentencing and there should not be any time remission at all. If criminals knew that 5 years meant 5 years and not 3 they might think again - and the home comforts of jail should also be removed and army discipline introduced. Let them have a spell of "Colchester" army punishment - either make them or break them!!
