A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital after injuring her wrists in a fall.

The woman, in her 30s, was out walking near the Holland's Pies factory, in Baxenden, when she stumbled.

A member of her party called for an ambulance and a rescue helicopter was scrambled from Barton Aerodrome, in Irlam, Greater Manchester.

The air ambulance landed in the field at St John's Stonefold CofE Primary School, in Rising Bridge Road, and paramedics ran with a stretcher to where the woman was waiting.

A crowd of more than a dozen residents watched as the drama unfolded around 10.30am on Saturday.

An eyewitness said: “The whole operation mustn’t have taken more than ten or 15 minutes.

“Loads of people ran over to see what was going on.

“The paramedics climbed out of the helicopter, picked up the stretcher and ran to where the woman was.

“They came back carrying her a few minutes later.”

The woman was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.
