A MAN who could not accept his 18-year marriage was over threatened to smash the windows at his ex-wife's home, a court heard.

John Squire, 49, of Juniper Court, Accrington, admitted threatening to damage or destroy property.

He was given a two-year community order, with the domestic violence programme and supervision.

Burnley Crown Court was told Squire had been violent towards Paula Squire in the past.

Squire, who would make drunken telephone calls to his son and daughter, smashed his wife's cheekbone in 1991 after she hit a door when he pushed her.

He had been made the subject of a restraining order since the relationship ended, but had flouted it.

Judge Andrew Woolman told Squire he had made a thorough nuisance of himself, but, added: "I am told you have finally seen the light and you have had to stop drinking for medical reasons.

"This is your last chance to sort all this out. If you breach this order then you will go to prison.

It may not be for all that long, but it will teach you a lesson."

Silvia Dacre, prosecuting, said Squire, who had two teenage children, had divorced two years ago.
