A MAN was knocked unconscious with a single blow from behind in a "vicious" unprovoked attack in a pub.

Wilfred Evans, 45, had his cheekbone broken in the assault, which happened as he enjoyed a drink with his partner in Accrington town centre.

Police are now hunting his attacker, who fled from the Calder pub, Blackburn Road, after the incident, which was caught on CCTV.

And they want to speak to a man caught on camera, who they believe was involved in the incident.

Mr Evans, who works as a domestic appliance engineer in Darwen, said that he and partner Julie McMurrough, 48, had just entered the Calder at around 9.30pm on Sunday and were waiting to be served at the bar when he was punched.

He said: "I had no idea of what was coming. One minute I was waiting to be served and the next I was picking myself up off the ground after being punched.

"I was just knocked out cold and I'm told I was out for a while.

"My partner tried to help me up but luckily the bar staff were great and they took me to the toilets to clean up a bit."

Police and ambulance crews arrived within minutes of the attack and Mr Evans, who lives with his partner in Avenue Parade, Accrington, was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment.

He is now faces the possibility of an operation on his broken cheekbone.

Mr Evans added: "I have no idea why it happened, it might have been a random attack or just mistaken identity, but I just want the police to catch who did it.

"It's really shaken both me and Julie up quite badly and I'm terrified that this could happen again, either to myself or someone else.

"I'm just trying to get my head around everything that's happened."

Det Sgt Mark Vaughton said: "This appears to have been an unprovoked and motiveless attack on an innocent man who was out enjoying a drink with his family.

We are keen to speak to the man in the CCTV footage who we believe was involved and would appeal to anyone who knows the identity of this man to contact Accrington CID.

Police say the attacker is described as white, approximately 6ft tall, with a stocky build and short dark brown hair. He was wearing a bright green t-shirt, dark trousers and white trainers.

He fled The Calder pub in the direction of Accrington town centre after the assault.

Anyone with information can contact police on 01254 353743 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I don't know Mr Evans or his family but I do know the NO-BODY deserves to be attacked from behind, it is the actions of a low-life coward. As for 'Crusader' you must be some kind of simple-minded idiot to suggest that Mr Evans was attacked because of something his wife or her siblings may have done 20 years ago, are you trying to say that we should all be held accountable for the youthful acts of our relatives? Don't so pathetic. This was obviously a completely unprovoked senseless attack by a mindless thug who was too cowardly to confront his victim face to face. I hope that Mr Evans makes a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with him and his family, I hope that you can all put this terrible incident behind you. I also hope that the police catch this mindless thug and that he gets what is coming to him, and also that Crusader gets a taste of the injustice of mindless thugs one day too.

I must say that I have known Julie personally, and while I can say she isn't perfect(who is!),I can't say that she does not deserve the flak that CRUSADER has given her.
Glad to see that that you are sticking up for your mum,Angela.

Family,you could be right.
As for Crusader, get a life, you seem to know an awful lot about these people, could it be that you are not perfect and have a not so wonderful past? And how much of a weasel are you? Nice to know that you would shake someone's hand and be nice to their face but behind their backs you say allsorts. What kind of gladiator is that? IDIOT!!!!!
Angela, you carry on standing up for your mum!!!

I truly sympathise with Mr Evans and his wife, firstly for the terrible unprovoked attack but mainly for the comments of the evil-minded Crusader. The sad fact is that Mr Evans and his wife probably know this piece of scum and man even have considered them a friend but at a time there friends oare needed you can always count on the low-life scumbags to crawl out from under their stones and stab you in the back. The worst of it is that they are too cowardly to use their real names and hid behibd a pathetic pseudo name. The advise I would give to Mr Evans and his family is to stay strong and be there for each other, as it is clear that you are a caring family and I hope that the moron Crusader gets their comeuppance one day. My love and best wishes to the Evans family and I hope you make a speedy recovery Mr Evans xx
