A CAR crashed into a house following a 90mph police chase.

Police were pursuing a driver through Accrington when the vehicle crashed into a house, in Burnley Road, at around 12.30am.

The crash left the front door wrecked and severely damaged the front of one of the homeowner’s cars - a blue Ford Fiesta.

Officers have launched an investigation into the collision after the driver ran off from the scene near the junction with Queens Road West, and no one has been arrested.

A police spokesman said: “Officers became aware of a vehicle driving at high speed in Burnley Road, and a pursuit began. However the pursuit was called off after just one minute due to safety concerns.

“The car then collided with a house but when officers arrived at the scene the driver had fled.”

Pat Arkwright and husband Stephen, who have lived in the house for four years, said they were both ‘devastated’.

Mrs Arkwright, 57, said she had taken the day off work after the incident left her feeling ‘numb’ and in a ‘daze’.

She said: “We were all in bed and woke up to this mighty bang. We got out of bed and heard someone in the street say ‘oh my god they have run into the house’.

“I just could not believe it. It was like something out of a movie and you think it would never happen to you.

“When it happened my son ran out of the house and got into his car and tried to find the guy but he had disappeared.

“I have no idea how much it will cost to replace. I’ve been on to my insurance company and they said they couldn’t get anybody to come round until the next day – which is unbelievable.”

Mr Arkwright, 53, added: “I was devastated. I went to work this morning and almost burst into tears.

“I haven’t gone back to bed because I keep hearing the bang. I do not want to sleep in the house tonight.”

Sister Edna Leggat, 59, from Blackburn, said: “I couldn’t believe it. I messaged her straight away to see if everyone was OK and she rang me and told me what was going on. They were very lucky.”
