VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help manage a fun run in memory of a teenager who died following a severe allergic reaction.

The five kilometre run was organised after 15-year-old Megan Lee died from a reaction after eating a takeaway meal on New Year’s Day.

It will raise money and awareness for the Anaphylaxis Campaign, a charity which supports people at risk of severe allergies.

The run will take place at the Wilsons Playing Fields in Clayton-le-Moors.

The Oswaldtwistle teenager was said to ‘touch the hearts of everyone she ever met’.

Kerry Ainsworth, 31, Megan’s auntie, said more than £1,000 has been raised so far for the charity.

She said: “We’ve got around 100 people signed up so far so things are looking great already.

“We hope to have as many people as possible come down.

“I’m hoping to take part in the run, it would be my first five kilometre run so it will be nice to do it in Megan’s memory.

“But if there’s not enough volunteers then I will have to come away and help make sure things run smoothly.”

The charity raises awareness of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction which can effect the airways, heart, gut and skin.

Common causes of a reaction can include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, shellfish, sesame seeds and kiwi fruit.

Several fundraising events have taken place for the former Christopher’s CE High School student.

These have included a fashion evening, a charity walk and a play aiming to boost awareness of rare allergies, held at the Civic Arts Centre.

A permanent memorial to celebrate the life of Megan was unveiled at the grounds of her old school.

It included a sculpture above a bench with a pink plaque saying ‘in memory of Megan Lee, Always in our hearts’.

The run will start at 11am on Sunday, June 11, and a £5 entry fee will be payable on the day at registration.

A target of £2,000 has been set to raise for the charity.

Mrs Ainsworth said: “We are looking forward to everyone coming down and enjoying the run while raising important awareness about allergic reactions.

“As everyone who knew Megan she would do anything to help anyone, so raising money for charity in her memory would be something she would be proud of.”
