A ‘DEVASTATED’ family have been told treatment to help a toddler battling cancer is going to cost £68,000 more than they thought.

Charlie Procter, three, was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma, a type of cancer, a year ago and has undergone more than 20 rounds of chemotherapy.

The Accrington youngster was set to travel to America at the end of the month to cure the tumour in his lungs which doctors would not provide in the UK.

The family had aimed to raise £250,000 to cover the costs, however they have been told they need £315,000 in total, an increase of more than 27 per cent.

Charlie’s mum, Amber Scholfield, 22, said her 'head was spinning' when she heard the news.

She said: “We’re devastated. It’s such a blow to us and we don’t know what to do.

“We had raised between £70,000 and £75,000 in a few weeks, we were doing so well.

“But we don’t know what we are going to do now. We’ve got to raise so much more.

“The costs are huge, just to use the surgery room alone costs £90,000.

“We’re looking at different possibilities, for example if it would be cheaper to fly the surgeons over here to perform it in England.”

Miss Schofield and Charlie’s father, Ben Procter, also have a nine-month-old daughter, Jessica.

The family had estimated it would cost £23,000 for a six-week treatment course and £30,000 for an eight-week course, but if Charlie had to stay longer it would cost up to £250,000 with accommodation and flights.

Miss Schofield said: “We told Charlie he was going to be getting on a plane to see a magic doctor to help him.

“He asked us every day when the plane was coming, but we’ve had to stop telling him now because we don’t know when we’ll be able to send him.

“He’s been very brave. He’s been full of energy and chatty, which has helped me and Ben massively.

“He was a lazy baby and slept a lot, but now he keeps us going as he is constantly moving.

“The support we’ve had from everyone has been amazing, we’ve raised so much in so little time.”
