A NEW system is to be introduced after a council was revealed as having one of the worst recycling rates in the North West.

Hyndburn Council has approved plans for the scheme which is says will be ‘more efficient’ and will replace the white sack and blue box system with two new wheelie bins for each household in 2018.

It comes after the authority was named alongside Liverpool City Council as only recycling 28 per cent of waste in the 12 months ending April 2016.

Council leader Cllr Miles Parkinson said: “Our plans mean that not only will we all be able to recycle much more efficiently, but also our streets will be cleaner, as the rubbish that sometimes drops from the boxes and the sacks on collection day will be contained within the wheelie bins, which are much easier to handle.

“Encouraging recycling reduces landfill, which helps to keep costs down and also protects the environment.

“A total of 66 per cent of the borough’s homes are on terraced streets with no gardens; this new way of collecting will make recycling much easier for owners of terraced properties, as they will no longer need to carry sacks and boxes through the house to place at front door for collection.

“We also plan to allow garden waste to be deposited in the normal household waste bin by this summer for those who wish to do so.”
