ACCRINGTON Stanley have secured the signing of a famous fan as they look to gather support for their fundraising campaign for a new big TV screen.

Cricketer and one-time Stanley player David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd visited the Wham stadium on Wednesday to ‘sign’ for the club as part of their #upinlights campaign.

The initiative has been launched by the Official Accrington Stanley Supporters Association to raise £40,000 for a new screen which will show the score and replays at the ground.

Since the scheme launched at the end of last month, the project has raised more than £6,000.

The lifelong fan and now television cricket pundit said: “It’s a terrific effort by supporters, I’ve always been a fan of big screens.

“All along we’ve been a community club, with everybody working together.

“Raising £5,000 in a week is a great effort, to raise the full amount will be a tough task but it’s got everybody behind it.”

The campaign, which has currently collected £6,088, aims to deliver the first electronic screen at the ground to provide highlights and information to those at the ground.

The free-standing screen would stand in the area adjacent to the control box between the Whinney Hill away terrace and the away seating.

The money is being raised by people buying a series of prizes such as training with the first team, signed memorabilia and, as Mr Lloyd has, signing for Stanley.

He said: “The new owners have been terrific, they’ve been breathing life into the club.

“The lads involved with the club now are a hardy lot, they’re a great bunch.

“A lot of work has been put in to make it a ground to be proud of, everybody is making a real effort for the cause.”

An update has also been provided on the proposed new stand at the ground, which would replace the existing North stand.

Plans were approved in June for the new 1,500 all-seater stand and a date has not yet been set for work to commence.

Managing director David Burgess said: “It’s going to be next season at the earliest now.

“Priorities change as the seasons goes on, they change on a daily basis.”
