A 53-YEAR-old man has been left with a suspected broken ankle and fractured cheek bone after being attacked from behind in an Accrington pub.

The man, who is from Accrington, walked towards the toilets of the Abbey Hotel at around 10.50pm last night when he was assaulted.

He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital, where he was undergoing surgery today.

A man in his 20s, who is also from Accrington, has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and is being quizzed by detectives this afternoon.

Detectives said they were unsure how many people were involved in the attack or what the motive was but said it took place in or around the toilets of the pub in Bank Street.

Detective Sergeant Adrian McHugh said: "To get this level of injury it is clear to me that this has been a sustained and violent assault.

"The pub was quite busy at the time of the disturbance and I would ask anyone with information to contact police on 101, quoting crime number ED1607338."
