The incident happened between 9.30pm and 10pm on Sunday The offenders, both in dark clothing and wearing face coverings, burst through the entrance and ran towards the counter, grabbing a member of staff from behind and demanding she opened the tills.

The shop worker was then dragged through to the staff office and ordered to open a safe. She was threatened with a silver-handled kitchen knife and the money was taken.

At the same time, a male member of staff, who had been in the stock room, entered the shop floor and tried to call the police.

The other attacker, who had been emptying tills, tried to stop him by hitting his hand with a weapon, breaking his phone.

The two men then left the store in the direction of Cambridge Street and Windsor Street.

DS Andy Horne said: “This was a very serious incident, which has left two members of staff extremely shaken and traumatised.

“The female member of staff is bruised and sore from being manhandled around the store, while the male member of staff was left with injuries to his hand, which he sustained while being stopped from calling the police.

“We believe there were a lot of people in the area, including in the shop’s car park and forecourt, who may have seen something that could help us with our enquiries.

“We would urge anybody who was in the area at the time who could help with our enquiries to get in touch.”

Damian Haworth, a Burnley Road resident said: “I looked out my window and saw the garage had been taped off on both entries and there were lots of police cars around.

“I didn’t know what was going on but they were there for quite a long time.”
