PROGRESS on Accrington’s new £6.4million bus station is going well as the building takes shape ready for a Spring opening.

County public transport chiefs and Hyndburn Council leader Miles Parkinson expect it will open its doors to the travelling public in May.

Originally planned to be in operation by March, bad weather has put back the work schedule for the Crawshaw Street public transport hub by another two weeks.

Lancashire County Council public transport officer Greg Bonner said: “Works are progressing well on the bus station, as it starts to take shape both internally and externally.

“There have been some delays over the past month or so due to adverse weather conditions including heavy rain, high winds and frost.

“Despite this, works have been progressing on major elements such as the roof, brickwork to both the external and internal walls and surfacing to bus apron has commenced.

“Expected completion is currently anticipated to be two weeks later than previously suggested at Friday, May 13.”

Mr Bonner warned of further traffic disruption associated with the £40million Pennine Reach public transport improvement scheme of which the bus station is a key part.

He said: “The next major set of roadworks are at the Sparth Road junction in Clayton-le-Moors.

“These will see improvements made to the junction including the introduction of a new bus lane on Whalley Road.

“Works due to start on Monday, January 4 are expected to take nine weeks. “
