PART of Accrington town centre became a Dickensian wonderland at a Christmas event attended by hundreds of families.

Warner Street was transported back in time for a traditional Victorian Christmas event.

Organised by Evonne Harwood, of Pink Magpie Vintage Emporium, Kate Fury of Clean Green Recovery and Hyndburn Chamber of Trade, visitors enjoyed musicians, street entertainers and a variety of market stalls.

A candlelight procession led by Accrington Pipe Band made its way to an outdoor nativity play and carol service at St James’ Churchyard, where there were Victorian fairground rides.

Accrington resident Martin Wood said: “It was a fantastic advert for community spirit.

Lancashire Telegraph:

“From little ones meeting Roger the reindeer and trying their hand at magic tricks, to older folk sampling local cheese.

“It’s a credit to the organisers that so many people turned out on such a cold evening.”

Many of those taking part were in Dickensian costume, with visitors encouraged to also dress the part, while mulled wine and roast chestnuts added to the festive flavour.

Evonne said: “It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages out enjoying themselves around the arcade.

“I can honestly say we didn’t have one negative comment about the event.”

Lancashire Telegraph:

Thursday, December 19 will see the final late night shopping event before Christmas, with a chance to snap up last minute bargains before the big day. Shoppers on that night can enjoy free roast chestnuts, mulled wine and mince pies supplied by Hyndburn Borough Council.
