A 25-YEAR-OLD man crashed his car into the Accrington railway viaduct after going looking for his girlfriend in the early hours of the morning.

Daniel James Cardwell, of Church Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was fined £300 with £150 criminal court charge, £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge and banned from driving for 18 months.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said police were called to the Eastgate roundabout under the viaduct where a car had collided with the stone wall.

Damian Pickup, defending, said Cardwell had been out with his girlfriend and there was a disagreement which resulted in him getting a taxi home.

“He panicked when he got home and she wasn’t answering her phone,” said Mr Pickup.”He made the regrettable decision to go back out in his car and try and find her.”
