A 60-YEAR-OLD woman suffered serious injuries after being crushed between a caravan and a wall in Accrington.

The woman, named locally as Guilda Parkinson, was airlifted to hospital after suffering a punctured lung and broken ribs during the incident.

It happened when Mrs Parkinson, of Burnley Road in the town, was attempting to guide the driver of a Land Rover, which was towing the caravan, down a narrow alleyway, off Peel Park Avenue.

As the driver attempted to turn the vehicle Mrs Parkinson became wedged between the caravan and a brick wall.

Following the accident, which happened at 2pm on Sunday, Mrs Parkinson was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital, where she remains.

Neighbours spoke of their shock and sent their good wishes to Mrs Parkinson, who is believed to be a dinner lady at nearby Peel Park Primary School.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "They have done that manoeuvre lots of times trying to get down that narrow alley. But unfortunately this time she has been crushed. They were both in shock. I just hope they're both all right."

Another neighbour said: "I think it's absolutely terrible. She's a lovely lady who's really popular in the community. I hope she gets well soon."

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “A 60-year-old woman got out of the a Land Rover Discovery to guide the driver down a narrow alleyway. Unfortunately she became wedged between the caravan and a brick wall as the driver attempted to turn the vehicle. As a result, she suffered a punctured lung and broken ribs.

"We are treating this incident as a tragic accident."

A spokesman for the North West Air Ambulance said: “We were called out to a trauma incident at 2.15pm on Sunday involving a female in her 60s with injuries after being crushed between a caravan and a wall.

“We flew the patient to Royal Preston Hospital.”
