A COMMUNITY co-operative shop in Accrington is to launch a second open share offer.

One Planet, in Abbey Street, was set up as a community owned co-operative retail shop in May 2010 by a dedicated group of volunteers, supported by the PROSPECTS Foundation, which is Hyndburn’s environmental charity.

The initial community share issue raised £15,000 through the support of 100 members, to get the shop open and trading for the first few years.

Now after nearly five years of successful trading, One Planet needs a fresh injection of funds to grow and develop the co-operative with new additional members.

A spokesman from the shop said: “The aim of One Planet was to provide a one-stop shop where people in Hyndburn, and further afield, could come and purchase a range of products that were kinder to the environment as well as being more socially and ethically responsible, as there was nowhere in the local area to meet this need.

“As well as the retail shop, with the help of additional grants, over the past five years, the One Planet Co-operative has delivered a number of community outreach programmes, therefore embedding their support for the local community.

“Investing in One Planet is one way that you can help to build a better society.”

The shop now has 125 local members and is urging potential investors and local residents to get a copy of the open share document and see for themselves what the fuss is about.

They can either call into the shop at 54 Abbey Street, Accrington, BB5 1EE, or visit their website at oneplanet.coop and click on the link titled ‘Become a Member’.
