Despite this, the club said it was producing 250 commemorative tickets which have all sold raising £5,000.

Club chairman Peter Marsden said 100 tickets were sold to a fan in Brazil.

Phil Glovers is originally from Accrington but moved to Brazil in 1960 where he eventually became managing director of the Copacabana Palace Hotel.

Mr Marsden said: “I can assure our supporters that we didn’t do this for the money – by far and away the main reason for the Game That Never Was was to raise the profile of the club.

"And although some may disagree I personally feel this has been an unqualified success and I am sure further good will come of this and nationally and internationally the Stanley family will continually to grow.
