A MAJOR housing development in Accrington has moved one step closer.

Ninety-one homes and two industrial units will be built at Hameldon Mill early next year after the land was sold.

One of Hyndburn’s biggest employers, Findel Plc, was granted planning permission after its subsidiary company, Express Gifts, closed its warehouse and sample room in 2010.

The six-acre site has now been sold to Persimmon Homes Lancashire for an undisclosed sum.

In October, the housing developer was granted permission to build the mixture of two-, three-, and four-bedroomed homes, as well as bungalows.

Property agents Trevor Dawson said Persimmons intend to start work early in the new year, “providing a quality residential development” close to Accrington Cricket Club and Accrington Stanley.

Partner Michael Cavannagh said: “This site, when redeveloped, will provide good quality residential properties located in an attractive area of Accrington close to many local amenities whilst also providing excellent access to the town centre and M65 motorway.”

However, local Ukip Councillor Malcolm Pritchard expressed his displeasure at the decision.

He said: “It’s a bit disappointing but we have to accept it now. The powers that be did it, so I don’t know now, we will see. I know a lot of people in Moss Hall Road are putting their bungalows up for sale.

“I will keep fighting for the residents around here.”

The council gave the go ahead for the demolition of the former mill, which dated back to the 1920s, in 2011.

Findel Ltd, which employs 1,600 people at its main base in Henry Street, Church, as well as at a call centre in Clayton-le-Moors, said it planned to reinvest money from the sale of the land into the business.

Speaking at the time, Council leader Miles Parkinson said: “It is really good news to hear they plan on investing into their business and that there is potential for growth rather than cuts.

“However, this scheme would have to be suitable for nearby residents too.”

The employment section of the development will consist of two buildings within an area of 4,500 sq ft near the site’s access on Marlborough Road.
