A TEENAGER found in possession of an eight-inch hunting knife claimed he had disarmed another man to prevent him committing a criminal offence.

But Keaton Whyte was convicted of illegal possession of the knife after a trial at Blackburn magistrates.

Peter King, defending, said the magistrates had decided that while Whyte had good reason for having the knife in the first place he kept it for too long and did not immediately tell police he had it when they approached.

Whyte, 19, of Malt Street, Accrington, was convicted after trial and the case adjourned for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

District judge James Clarke, having read the report and the magistrates comments, referred it back to the bench that had sat on the trial.
