A ‘PARANOID’ young dad who assaulted his partner for the second time, was said to have tried to ‘strangle’ her after a night out, court heard.

Burnley magistrates were told how Shane Wyer, 24, was alleged to have grabbed mother-of-two Justine Anderton by the throat, pinned her against a wall, punched her repeatedly in the head and kicked her shin at her Rising Bridge home.

The victim had phoned Wyer's mother amid the alleged sustained violence, didn't speak, but left the line open so she could hear what was happening.

When police arrived after the incident at Hoyle Street, they found Ms Anderton with scratches to her face and neck, a bruised ear and bruises to her leg. Her head was sore where she claimed to have been hit.

Wyer admitted assault by beating on October 11, but claimed Ms Anderton attacked him and alleged he kicked her shin.

The defendant, of Washington Street, Accrington, now faces a trial over the facts of the case and was bailed. He has a previous conviction for assaulting the victim in March, but, the hearing was told, the pair intend to reconcile.

Prosecutor Enza Geldard said Wyer and Ms Anderton had been in a relationship for two years and had a baby.

Both had been out and the victim set off home at about 3.45am. Just before 6am, she received an unpleasant text message from Wyer and and at 6.10am, he turned up and walked in.

Miss Geldard said Wyer was then said to have grabbed her by the throat, was verbally abusive and demanded to know where she had been. He let go, she sat down and she rang his mother and left the line open so she could hear what was going on.

The defendant then allegedly grabbed her throat again, struck her head and kicked her. Fearful of what he would do next, the victim terminated the phone call, went upstairs and lay on the bed.

Wyer followed, still shouting and repeating himself.

The defendant was then said to have lent over her, taken hold of her around the neck and punched her to the head at least five times. Ms Anderton grabbed Wyer's face, stood up, got her phone and called the police.

Imran Hussain, defending, said Wyer stated both parties had been drinking.

He said: “He says he simply fended her off. He says it was nothing more than that.”

The solicitor said when Ms Anderton was sitting down, Wyer lost his self control. Mr Hussain added: “He went over and kicked her in the shin. That wasn't in self defence.”
