Bowling green renamed in memory of Hyndburn's former MP Ken Hargreaves

A PARK bowling green is to renamed in memory of a former East Lancashire MP.

Friends and colleagues who worked to improve Hyndburn communities with the borough’s former MP Ken Hargreaves say it was one of his last wishes to be remembered in his home town.

Councillors, and bowlers and park volunteers are said to have welcomed the idea to rename the bowling green at Oswaldtwistle’s Rhyddings Park as the Ken Hargreaves Bowling Green.

Former councillor and long term friend of Ken’s Susan Haworth has also pledged to donate a trophy to Rhydding Park bowlers after they decided to hold an annual tournament in his memory.

She said: “It’s really fitting and what Ken wanted. The bowlers and Friends of Rhyddings Park have been very supportive.”

Coun Peter Britcliffe who served alongside Ken for many years said the tribute would be a fitting one.

He said: “It’s a lovely idea which Ken knew about before he died. He himself said he would like Rhyddings Park bowling green to be the place where he is remembered. "Ken lived right next to Rhyddings Park for many years and it is where he took many walks. The bowlers and the friends of Rhyddings Park are very happy with this idea. "This is a tremendous tribute to Ken and will be much appreciated by his constituents who hold him in such high esteem.”

The plan was also approved by Oswaldtwistle Area Council, who are to provide benches which will also be dedicated to Ken.
