A WORLD-renowned rocker is set to become an ambassador for Accrington Stanley Football Club.

The town’s most famous musical export Jon Anderson, who found fame with the progressive 1970’s rock band Yes, has agreed to help spread the word about the League Two club on the international circuit.

The 67-year-old lead singer has even promised to play a gig at the Livingstone Road stadium at some date in the future.

He will join former player Mike Ferguson, the most well-known face of the 1962 squad, who also went on to have a glittering career with a host of big name clubs, as the 2012 ambassadors.

Accrington Stanley chief executive Rob Heys said: “I think a lot of people would be very surprised to learn Jon Anderson was born and went to school in Accrington.

“I travel up and down the country with Accrington Stanley and there is a lot of goodwill towards the club.

"But people do have this misconception that Accrington is a small town in Lancashire where nothing much happens.

“There is a whole generation of people who love Jon’s music, but don’t realise his connections with the town. His involvement with the club will not only boost the profile of the club, but that of the town too.

“He lives in California, but if he happened to be in the country at the same time as one of our home fixtures it would be brilliant to get him down to the Crown Stadium.”

A regular ex-mascot at Peel Park, Jon was a pupil at St John’s Infants School, Baxenden. Jon launched a solo tour of the US in February and is also recording new material for his next album.

Think it was Dave Foster ex of the Warriors who formed "Accrington Stanley" Coeur de Leon...Jonny as he was known then assumed the name Hans Christian (geddit?)and messed around in the London music scene before joining Gun for a short while.

Ive got the 12"on blue vinyl,quality tune! Yes,like Jons voice wasnt everybodys cup of tea,however any band who can make an album as stunning as Close to the edge should be revered.Remember as a lad in Accy virtually all my mates mums claiming to of gone out with him!

what should be remembered about Jon and Yes is they were an experimentel group. It`s bravery what drove their music not monertary concerns! I`m glad he`s looks happy with his contibution to this world. In the end all our souls can do is hope to rest in peace!!
