Tributes to Accrington Stanley 'terrace legend', 33

Accrington Stanley supporters have paid tribute to a ‘true terrace legend‘ who was killed on a railway line.

Police said Antony Cox had laid on the tracks near Church and Oswaldtwistle Station as a train approached.

The driver tried to stop but Mr Cox, of Oswaldtwistle, was struck.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4.05pm on Monday.

Those who knew Antony say he was a lifelong fan whose presence on the terraces made him ’part of the Stanley matchday’.

Yesterday items had been left in memory of the 33-year-old former Tinker and Budget landlord at the station.

Flowers, Stanley scarves and a flag have been laid by well-wishers on the Blackburn-bound platform.

Reds fan and Lancashire Telegraph columnist Stephen Lowe said he was shocked by the news.

He said: "He will be sorely missed. Coxy was one of Accrington Stanley’s characters and it’s an absolute tragedy.

"He will be missed by all the Ultras and supporters as a whole.

"He was an an enthustiastic supporter. Stanley was his life.”

Accrington Stanley Chief Executive Rob Heys said: “I am absolutely gutted.

"This news has come like a bolt out of the blue. I knew Antony for years and years.

"As long as I have been going to Stanley as a little lad, Coxy has been there.

"It’s just unbelievable. We feel great sympathy for him and for his family.

"He will certainly be missed at the club.”

Chairman of Stanley Supporters Rob Russell said Antony’s passions were football, pool, darts and cricket.

He said: “He always had something to say, always went out of his way to talk to people and everyone has a good, funny memory of him.

"He was a terrace legend.”

rob mentions gutted, that seems like the right word to me, to feel one of our own could feel so low and us not know how bad he felt! But last time I saw him he was laughing and joking, depression truly is a terrible thing!

Thinking about his family and of course little (ok not so little) mickey.

I feel so saddened and shall miss him at each and every match

RIP chuck, I can only echo what the above person has written - Saturday is certainly going to be a very emotional day for all at Stanley. Went up to the ground last night with some flowers as I felt I had to 'do something' - I know you weren't really a flowery person (well except for your hawaian shirts) but couldn't think what else to do except place them near the Clayton End where you had so many happy times.

It was so sad to here what had happened and how low he must have felt to do something so desperate. I knew Coxy from our Catering College years and being in the pool team for The George Hotel years ago. He was such a nice funny lad and would do anything to help anyone. My heart goes out to his family and friends xx

went to school with coxy and havnt seen the lad for about 10 years due to living down south ..but has soon has i read the headlines a picture of coxy came in to my head with out seeing it was him i only had to read stanley terrace legend prove how much time he did give to his first love.. you was a top lad i hope you rest in peace my freind ....duncan eastham ex moorhead

i knew antony and his family in oswaldtwistle.to read this has really gutted me...i have lots of memories at james street club of me and antony,what a cracking lad he was,when talking about football....(liverpo
ol)he knew what he was saying..it has been my pleasure to have known antony and his family..i never forget him ...now he can form his own ,sports games in heaven luv ye pal ....joe....joseph dodds

My heart goes out to all the family, Mick i'm sorry for your loss. Coxy was a top man we played cricket together for The Taverners many years ago and I still saw him once in a while. Always had a smile on his face, RIP Antony a true gent.

knew coxy and his dad, from one footy fan to another he was proud of the team he supported like every one is with the teams we all follow. i so him about an hour before it happend he looked fine its just a shock r.i.p coxy and sorry to mick and family

the train driver will of course get councilling and help from his union and all the therapy people,but where were all these people when coxy needed them,i do feel sorry for the driver but that last post seems to be blaming coxy,god knows what was going through his mind when he laid down on those tracks,but there was no one there to help Coxy through his problems,so Warren 2007 just think about our friend who was driven to this by god knows what. RIP pal

I'm a Newcastle fan who came to watch Accy last season and was fortunate to meet Antony who took us for a few beers and then in to meet the fans and watch the match. Everyone seemed to know him and he was a friend to so many. I was amazed by his warmth, sense of humour and passion for Accrington Stanley. To me whenever I think of Accy Stanley I'll always think of Antony. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this terrible time. RIP.

I knew Antony since he was a young boy.... totally saddened and shocked... my heartfelt sympathy to his mother, father, brothers,and sister..and all his family i can't begin to imagine their pain...god bless you all.... R.I.P Antony hope you are at peace night and godbless
