HYNDBURN is becoming ‘buried under roadworks’ after eight separate schemes began in just one week.
Projects in both town centres and residential areas have got under way as council bosses have been accused bringing many roads to a standstill.
There are also 10 further schemes that are already ongoing in the borough.
All of the latest schemes are to allow ‘highway maintenance works’ to be carried out.
Much of the work is linked to poor quality roads that were further damaged during recent bad weather.
Projects have started at Royds Avenue, Water Street, Cobham Road, Shap Close, Laund Road and Abbey Street in Accrington as well as in Within Grove, Huncoat, and Walmsley Street, Rishton.
The work comes on top of projects that have already got started at Station Road and Albert Street, Rishton, Haworth Street and Windsor Road, Oswaldtwistle, and Lindadale Avenue, Rock Street, Coleridge Drive, Arago Street, Blackburn Road, Church Street, all Accrington.
Labour group leader Graham Jones said that many schemes which were due to begin earlier this year had to be delayed because of the snow.
And he said now huge numbers of roadworks were being forced on the borough to make up for lost time.
He said the borough was 'buried under roadworks' adding: “The county council is really struggling to keep up with the work and there is now a huge amount going on in Hyndburn.
“It is very unfortunate that the schemes are all happening at once because they do cause a lot of disruption.
“The key thing is that this work is all vitally needed but the timing has been poor.”
The leader of Hyndburn Council Peter Britcliffe, who is also a county councillor, said the roads in the borough had been 'neglected for years' by previous county hall administrators.
He said: “I have had many complaints from people saying that pot holes are damaging cars.
“The work will cause disruption but it will be vital to improve our streets.”
