A MAN hoping to become Hyndburn’s next MP has claimed women should have to pay to have an abortion.
John Moss, who is on the final shortlist of candidates vying for the Conservative Party nomination, said medical abortion had become “a form of contraception” and should no longer be available for free on the NHS except in cases of rape or medical need.
He told the Lancashire Telegraph he stood by his views, first written on the Conservative Home website in 2007.
In his article, which sparked strong criticism on the site’s forum, Mr Moss, who has previously stood for the Tories in Hackney South, said vulnerable girls would benefit if they could say to a partner “If you get me pregnant, you’ll have to pay”.
A Tory Party spokesman said: “Members of the party are entitled to their views on individual matters and may express these views as they see fit.
“Opinions and views held by individual members do not necessarily reflect the views of the party as a whole.”
The Tory candidate will be selected at a meeting on Saturday.
