Hyndburn Conservative hopeful: Women should pay for abortions

A MAN hoping to become Hyndburn’s next MP has claimed women should have to pay to have an abortion.

John Moss, who is on the final shortlist of candidates vying for the Conservative Party nomination, said medical abortion had become “a form of contraception” and should no longer be available for free on the NHS except in cases of rape or medical need.

He told the Lancashire Telegraph he stood by his views, first written on the Conservative Home website in 2007.

In his article, which sparked strong criticism on the site’s forum, Mr Moss, who has previously stood for the Tories in Hackney South, said vulnerable girls would benefit if they could say to a partner “If you get me pregnant, you’ll have to pay”.

A Tory Party spokesman said: “Members of the party are entitled to their views on individual matters and may express these views as they see fit.

“Opinions and views held by individual members do not necessarily reflect the views of the party as a whole.”

The Tory candidate will be selected at a meeting on Saturday.

Good luck to the first girl who falls pregnant and then tries to get the father to cough up ... how many absent fathers are there around today and how many don't pay maintance for their kids?? Also what's going to happen when the father simply says 'it wasn't me'!!!

Tom has neither credited the original article nor represented correctly what I said.

Here is the link to the original article, for you to make your own minds up:

In it I clearly say that abortion would still be available free, on the NHS, in circumstances of rape, or serious risk to the health of the mother or unborn child.

What I don't believe is that making abortion easy is either what was intended by the original legislation, or that it has helped reduce unwanted pregnancies.

I don't think this will stop unwanted pregnancies. The only thing to stop teenagers getting pregnant is for the state to stop encouraging it by paying them to have child after child. I think that might be more of a vote winner - for the taxpayer anyway.

I have to agree with Alixet - this country needs to dismantle the benefits culture. This idea would probably be like every sledgehammer to crack a nut and would be more likely to penalise innocent people than the scutters.
I honestly can't see any party worth voting for but don't want to fall into the trap of apathy.

Hi John, Labour PPC Graham Jones here.

I have read you article and you say the following:
John Moss: "If you want to regard medical procedures to put right somebodies - avoidable - poor choices or mistakes as something that welfare should cover, then fine, argue your case. However, I believe the tax and benefit system - and the NHS forms part of that system - ought to encourage good things and discourage bad things.

I believe free abortion on the NHS is contributing to the high level of irresponsible sexual activity, which in turn is causing high levels of sexually transmitted disease and is contributing to a slide towards a society where there is no value placed on long-term, stable, loving relationships.

As I said in the article, if you insulate people from the consequences of their bad decisions, they keep on making them and, ultimately, it is people who haven't made the same bad choices who end up paying - and I think that's wrong.

I think my point is that the number of "unwanted sprogs" would reduce as the number of unwanted preganancies would reduce because women would be better able to insist on their partners using contraception or in saying no."

I disagree with your notion and disagree with your value judgement.

er, i've read it, and you don't appear to say abortion should be available in those circumstances. or do you mean on the forum after you have rightly been lambasted for your daft views? i'd say this is a pretty faithful account of what you wrote. methinks you are regretting penning an article that could have scuppered your chances in hyndburn!
