A BILINGUAL DVD created by Hyndburn pupils is being rolled out across East Lancashire in a bid to tackle terrorism.
Media studies pupils at Accrington Academy have created 'Roshni – Shining the Light of Hope' with the help of Lancashire Constabulary’s Prevent team, which works to reduce the risk of violent extremism in the area.
The Queens Road West school beat competition from the University of Central Lancashire to create the DVD, which shows harrowing images of the July 7 bombing in London with a contrasting voiceover encouraging the community to be vigilant.
The DVD newsletter, in English and Urdu, also offers advice on other topics such as health and fitness, diabetes and events in the area.
The school produced 500 DVDs, with £5,000 from Prevent, which will be disturbed in libraries and community centres. It is the first of three DVDs in the series.
The Prevent team and the academy are considering tackling alcohol and drugs misuse and sexual exploitation for other subjects.
Rosila Kana, from Prevent, came up with the idea.
She said she would consider taking the DVD nationally.
Koser Mahmood, English teacher and Prevent leader, said: “I think they have done a fantastic job with the supervision of the media department.
"It is about raising awareness on this issue and other issues which affect the community.”
Superintendent Terry Woods said: “I’m proud of what the young people have done.
“This is about engaging with people but there will also be some hard facts.
“I have led counter-terrorism operations in this division to ensure people are safe.
"This DVD may help mums recognise what’s going on.”
