Congestion, pollution, stress, cost (in time and money), and lost production when the weather turns foul are all negative consequences of people not working nearer home. And that isn't encouraged by the government in any way.
Jobseekers are required to look for work up to one and a half hours away by public transport yet Brown is in Copenhagen trying to save the world from climate change.
Our whole economy and society would work more efficiently and effectively if everyone worked nearer home, and every year when the snow falls we see the evidence of this.

And a Government Agency that tells people to look for work up to 40 miles away is not compatible with many other Government aims such as reducing congestion, pollution, etc, and which would inevitably see fewer problems when we get snow.
You're right about the cycling though -it IS suicidal!
The legal position with regard to clearing snow is very sad and another example of how a Government has broken the spirit of its people.

using grit from a grit bin provided by the local authority would not make you liable, nor would clearing every bit of ice and snow from the pavement outside your property so that the surface was better than the previous snow covered area; however if you poured hot water on to the footpath which then froze to form a nice ice rink then you would indeed be liable as you had been negligent in carrying out the act of pouring water which subsequently freezes and causes a greater hazard. <br><br>
Its all about reasonableness and common sense, unfortunately the "liability scaremongerers" always seem to roll out the "you will be sued" card when anyone even suggests doing something positive.<br><br>
PS; the requirement for householders to look after the footway outside their properties went out around 100 years ago.

it used to be great when i was a kid - you didnt even need money because a bin lid/baking tray or black bin bag made a superfast sledge.
the sound of kids having fun is so much better than sitting in and listening to the depressing news.

She is currently off for a few weeks citing work related stress...we are paying for her, meanwhile important services get overlooked due to lack of funds, thank you.... have a Happy Xmas on us.
It's about time a paradigm shift takes place within the council, I am sick to the back teeth of paying for sponging no good councillors and employees.

I do not condone bullying, although that is not the reason you have presumed in this case.
Many people work damned hard in this borough and get nothing when they are off, unlike council employees that bleed the system for all it's worth...don't ever deny that it does not happen..it does..and it stinks.

Face it, the U.K. isn't cut out for any type of snow related weather. Just enjoy the confusion and don't get **** by it all. I'm a Brit leaving in Canada it's -15 today I came in to the house the other day and put my hands in the fridge to warm up...lol. I'd have shorts on now if it was -5 today. Our avarage snow storm accumalation is 20 cms (per storm), we pay a lot of taxes to keep the roads clean and they do a good job. I don't think a lot of tax payers money is allocated the 'snow removel' in the U.K.

Shame our grit bins are empty, partly due to people taking grit to use in their allotments, rather than leave it there for a treacherous hill that pensioners use all day, every day.
LCC also swapped the grit bins for much smaller ones after last winter, sowe get half the grit we used to and it also seems we get refilled much less often if LT is to be believed, it will take a week) - a double whammy.

bobbins is it! Regardless of whether man is or is not the root cause of global warming, we are certainly not helping, bearing in mind CO2 levels are rather higher than they should maybe be.
I dont give a monkeys whether we are, or are not, the cause of global warming... however we DO need to be more efficient in our consumer lifesyle... and if that means recycling, reusing, or finding alternative means of electrical power then so be it.
I, for one, will be cutting my electrical bills and supplementing my income by recycling the valuable products...

Also, property owners are responsible for clearing the pavements in front of their properties of snow. What is it about the attitude of many people in this country to adversity? God knows what would happen in a real emergency such as war.
