Clayton-le-Moors women's ‘great escape’ to benefit charity

TWO Clayton-le-Moors women will travel 60 miles while handcuffed together in aid of cancer patients.

Sisters-in-law Jackie, 41, and Julie Bowker, 35, will start their “Great Escape” fundraiser from Strangeway’s Prison in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. After being shackled together, the pair will be taken in a coach with blacked out windows to an unknown location, 60 miles away from their final destination in Manchester.

Working together, and without using a map, money, mobile phone or valuables they have to make their way to the Printworks in Manchester.

The two women, who are married to brothers, have already raised £1,400 in sponsorship and say they plan to raise even more. They are appealing for more people to pledge support for their cause by signing their sponsor form on display at Optical Direct, Burnley Road, Clayton-Le-Moors, where they both work as dispense opticians.

Jackie said: “We’ve been fundraising for Macmillan for a while with the odd coffee morning here and there.

“Recently we saw this idea to do the great escape and we thought it was brilliant and signed up right away. "We want to raise as much money as possible because it’s such an important cause.”

The two women will join 100 others taking part in the event, who will all be handcuffed to a team mate before making their way back to the welcome party in Manchester on Saturday.
