ROYAL British Legion members joined together to hold a special commemoration to mark the anniversary of the start of one of the most brutal wars in history.

Pictured are members of the Accrington branch of the Royal British Legion celebrating 50 years since the outbreak of the Second World War.

The members came together to take a trip back down memory lane at the King Street working men's club in Accrington.

The King Street club would later go on to become 'Massala' Indian restaurant, which was ultimately demolished in November 2014.

As well as members of the group, Miss Royal British Legion East Lancashire County, Wendy Ashworth also visited to mark the celebration.

She is pictured front and middle to the left, sitting next to Miss Accrington British Legion, Janet Woodhouse.

The Accrington branch initially formed in 1921 and now meet on the last Sunday of every month at 12.30pm at the Stanley Street Club.

Everyone is in high spirits in the image from September 1989 which would have been a stark contrast to the mood 50 years earlier.

In September 1939 the Second World War began, starting a conflict which would last for six years.
