A WOMAN has been airlifted to hospital following a 'serious' collision.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Union Road, Oswaldtwistle shortly after 4pm following a collision between two pedestrians and a silver Ford Fiesta.

Lauren Gardner who witnessed the air ambulance's arrival said an elderly couple had been hit by the vehicle.

She said: "I didn't see it happen because I was driving, but I saw the helicopter come down.

"I believe it was an old couple who had been knocked down.

"The lady was airlifted and the man was taken to hospital by ambulance."

A spokesman for Lancashire police said the man and woman had suffered head and pelvis injuries.

She said: "The incident has been logged as serious.

"There has been a collision between a silver Ford Fiesta and two pedestrians.

"They have been taken to Royal Preston Hospital.

"One of them has suffered a head injury and the other has a suspected injury to their pelvis."

The road has been closed between Rhyddings Road and Haworth Street.
