A COUNCIL boss has praised a long-standing councillor and a cricketing legend after they were nominated for the title of Honorary Freeman of the Borough.

Cricketer and broadcaster David ’Bumble’ Lloyd and Hyndburn councillor of 38 years Bernard Dawson, both from Accrington, received their nominations on Thursday night at a Hyndburn Council meeting.

Mr Lloyd rose to fame playing cricket for Accrington Cricket Club and county cricket for Lancashire, and played in Test matches for England.

He went on to coach the England Cricket Team in 1996 and since 1999 he has been a regular Sky Sports television commentator.

Former Hyndburn mayor Cllr Dawson has served on Hyndburn Council for almost 38 years, representing the Peel ward for 34 years, but will not be standing for re-election at the local borough elections in May.

Council leader Cllr Miles Parkinson said: "Both David and Bernard are true gentlemen, both have been at the crease for a long time representing the borough in different ways and achieving so much in their respective fields.

"We’re really pleased that now they will both be conferred with the title of Honorary Freeman of the Borough, the highest award the Council can bestow in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the area."
