CALLS are being made for action to be taken at a fly-tipping hot spot after ‘dangerous’ waste was dumped there.

Waste has been spotted at the top of the path in Cobbs Lane in Oswaldtwistle, including wood, nails, spikes and carpet.

Andrew Young, from Oswaldtwistle, reported the waste after seeing the path blocked off while walking his dog.

He said it is not the first time waste has been seen dumped at the popular walking site in the past few months.

The 59-year-old said: “It’s the third time on Cobbs Lane this has happened.

“Dogs and horse riders use that path and there is just spikes dumped all over.

“Kids walk up there as well, it's dangerous.

“It’s right at the top, someone has clearly driven up there and dumped the waste. It’s just filthy.”

The dumping of the waste was also criticised by residents as it was on a public bridleway near to Jackhouse Nature Reserve.

It has left the path blocked off leaving walkers upset at being unable to use it.

Suggestions have been made as to how the problem could be stopped, but residents are wary of fly-tippers just moving elsewhere in the borough.

Mr Young said: “People have suggested putting some gates up. But they did that at Heys Allotments and it stopped.

“But now they’ve just moved elsewhere, we don’t want to just pass it round the borough.”

Cllr Judith Addison, who represents the area on Hyndburn Council, said this is an ongoing problem, on the path and further afield.

She said: “It’s sickening, you despair really. It’s been an ongoing problem for some time now, it’s disgraceful.

“We put some barriers up at part of the site a few years ago because of complaints, but the problem continues. I’m not sure how we can solve it, there isn’t an easy solution.

“It’s a big issue all over at the moment, it’s a sign of the times.”

Hyndburn Council said the waste has been reported and will be removed soon.

Cabinet member for waste Cllr Paul Cox said: “There has been some fly-tipping on Cobbs Lane.

“An inspector has been to look at the situation and the fly-tipping will be removed by the end of the week.

“It’s disappointing to see and it’s just irresponsible as we have a free bulky waste collection service that is free for residents."
