FEARS a borough could become a ‘jungle’ if the grass-cutting isn’t reintroduced are to be addressed.

Last week Cllr Miles Parkinson, leader of Hyndburn council, announced a review of grass cutting across the borough.

This came after County Hall bosses agreed to a budget amendment of around £600,000 for grass cutting across East Lancashire.

No date has been set by Lancashire County Council to determine when the money will be allocated from Lancashire County Council to Hyndburn, or how much money will be given.

Cllr Malcolm Pritchard, who represents the Milnshaw ward on Hyndburn Council, added: “Grass cutting needs to be dealt with otherwise our borough will end up like a jungle.

“There will be a big negative impact if the grass does not get cut because it would look like a wilderness.

“Old people could slip over all over the place.

“It would also give dog walkers the opportunity to let the dogs foul everywhere in the grass.”

Hyndburn Council has internally allocated thousands of pounds to deal with the growth of weeds and grass in the borough.

Hyndburn Cllr Ken Moss said: “Over the past couple of years government cuts have meant we have been spending less on grass cutting in the borough.

“Hyndburn Council has internally allocated £25,000 which will be immediately spent to deal with the issue.

“We have had a number of complaints from residents about grass verges which are just not being well maintained in the area.

“I hope to see the borough return to an acceptable state within a month.”
