A 41-YEAR-OLD man drove his van dangerously around a supermarket car park on a busy Saturday afternoon.

Blackburn magistrates heard Paul Graeme Knighton was involved in a long running dispute with Aldi in Great Harwood which had previously lead to a confrontation.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said on the day of the incident Knighton had shown deliberate disregard for the safety of others.

"He narrowly missed a lady walking her dog, came close to cars parked in disabled bays, demolished pedestrian bollards and a fence and came close to hitting a woman and a small child," said Miss Allan.

Knighton was convicted after trial of dangerous driving on January 14 and criminal damage to fence panels and two metal bollards.

He was made subject to a community order for two years with 15 days rehabilitation activity requirement and ordered to pay £500 costs and £85 victim surcharge.

He was banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to take an extended re-test.

Knighton was also made subject to an exclusion order which prohibits him from entering the Aldi store, its car park and surrounding land for two years.

Passing sentence District Judge James Clarke said Knighton had reversed a large vehicle through a pedestrian area on the supermarket car park.

"You deliberately used the vehicle to damage fences and there was clearly a risk of harm to others," he added.

Knighton later lodged an appeal against conviction and successfully applied for the driving ban to be removed pending the appeal hearing at the crown court.
