A 22-YEAR-OLD man with a drug debt was taken on a drive to use a stolen contactless debit card.

Blackburn magistrates heard Jamie Joseph Stanton used the card on 23 occasions buying goods worth more than £500.

Stanton, formerly of Midland Street, Accrington, but now living in Oldham, pleaded guilty to handling a stolen MasterCard and obtaining goods to the value of £528 fraudulently.

Philippa White, prosecuting, said in the early hours on November 27 there was a burglary in Accrington and two cars were stolen using keys taken during the burglary.

The debit card was in one of the cars and that night it was used 23 times to buy cigarettes and alcohol.

Stills from CCTV footage from the Tesco store in Accrington were circulated and when Stanton was arrested in Oldham a few days later for an unrelated matter an officer made the connection.

Stephen Krebs, defending, said Stanton had a drug debt of around £1,500 and had already been assaulted as a result.

On the night of the offence he was picked up and driven round and told to use the contactless card. “After the offences he was so worried about his safety that he left Accrington,” said Mr Krebs
