ANGRY people in Oswaldtwistle are calling for Lancashire County Council to help fix the ‘horrendous’ parking problem in the area.

Complaints have been made over cars parking on the kerb in Union Road opposite Rhyddings Street and causing problems for both traffic and pedestrians.

One of the solutions suggested is for bollards to be put on the pavement to prevent cars parking on the kerb.

The county council said it is looking into enquiries about the road and that bollards are a possibility.

Oswaldtwistle resident Steven Maurice, 53, said: “The parking on the kerb and chevrons and yellow lines has persisted.

“It’s blocking inside access in Union Road when cars are turning right up Rhyddings Street, it’s making it hard for pedestrians as well.

“It’s been happening for around a year now. Hopefully something can be done this time, like putting up the bollards on the pavement edge to stop the on kerb parking.”

He also said that parking problems get worse in the evenings due to the increased traffic for takeaways on the road approaching the junction.

Councillors in the area also share the same concerns and it has left them questioning what public money is spent on.

Cllr Peter Britcliffe, who represents the St Andrews ward, said: “The problem could be solved just with two or three bollards.

“It’s starting to make you wonder what people are paying council tax for at all.

“It just one of a number of problems in Union Road that just makes life all that more difficult.”

Cllr Judith Addison, who represents Oswaldtwistle on Hyndburn Council, said: “It’s a horrendous problem around there.

“I think people very often park inconsiderably, these are ongoing problems.

“The problems even stretch down the road to the Civic Theatre. It’s a matter of good manners.”

County council bosses say investigations are ongoing into the complaints.

Dwayne Lowe, area highways manager for Hyndburn, said: “One possible outcome could include measures such as bollards, but it’s too early to say until we’ve concluded our investigations.”
