A PENSIONER had a lucky escape after her Accrington home became engulfed in flames this morning.

The 73-year-old managed to flee the burning house in Haywood Road shortly before 10am with help from a neighbour.

Fire crews from Hyndburn and Burnley attended the scene and said the woman was lucky to escape the ‘well developed’ blaze at the detached bungalow.

The woman, thought to be the householder, managed to flee unharmed but had suffered smoke inhalation and required treatment from paramedics.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Three fire engines and crews, two from Hyndburn one from Burnley, responded to a 999 call reporting a fire in a detached bungalow.

“The building was described by firefighters as ‘well alight’ when they arrived but they quickly extinguished the fire.

“A woman, believed to be the householder, had got outside but was suffering from the effects of breathing smoke and ambulance paramedics were on the scene to take care of her.

“The Red Cross Fire Emergency Support Service vehicle and crew – who work in conjunction with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to offer immediate shelter and assistance to households disrupted by the consequences of a fire – were mobilised to the incident.”
