A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy suffered injuries to his head and ear after being struck by a car in Great Harwood.

Police and the ambulance service were alerted after the child was injured in St Hubert’s Road, close to Acky and Sons Mini-Market.

Officers said the young boy was hit by a grey Vauxhall Astra car while in the road on the terraced residential street close to the junction with Lomax Street.

He was taken by road ambulance to Manchester Children’s Hospital where he was treated for cuts to his his head and ear.

Police said his injuries were not life-threatening and early investigations had indicated the car was travelling at low speed.

No arrests have been made.

A 41-year-old man, who lives on nearby Grimshaw Street, said: “I passed shortly afterwards and the police had cordoned off quite a stretch of the road and side streets from Clayton Street to Lomax Street.

“They were there about two hours doing an investigation, checking tyre marks and stuff.

“It’s a busy road but there’s a lot of traffic calming and to be honest it’s hard to get up much speed.

“Everyone around here is hoping the lad is not too badly injured and gets better soon.”

St Hubert’s Road is a straight road, more than half-a-mile long and has extensive traffic calming measures.

The road has eight sets of speed humps and four ‘chicane’ style traffic calming features.

Stephanie Watson, 28, has recently moved to the area with her four-year-old twin boys.

She said: “It is very busy with traffic around here and there are a lot of side streets feeding traffic onto St Hubert’s Road, which leads to a lot of traffic.

“It’s a little bit shocking to hear a four-year-old has been injured.

“I won’t let my two out of my sight when I’m out with them.”

Officers are now urging anyone with information about the accident at 4.25pm on Wednesday to come forward.

A spokesman for Lancashire Road Police said: A police spokesman, said: “We were alerted at 4.25pm on Wednesday that a four-year-old had been injured after colliding with a Vauxhall Astra car in St Hubert’s Road, near Lomax Street.

“He was taken by ambulance to Manchester Children’s Hospital with cut to his head and ear.

“A section of the road was closed for while officers investigated the incident.

“His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

“I urge anyone who witnessed the incident or the moments prior to the incident to contact police.”
