AN ELDERLY woman was taken to hospital with burns following a minor gas explosion at her home in Accrington yesterday evening.

Firefighters said that the incident occurred after a gas ring on a cooker was accidentally knocked on and an explosion occurred when the woman tried to light it later.

The incident occurred at around 6pm on Saturday at the home in Aitken Street, Accrington.

The woman, said to be in her nineties, received burns to the head and hands and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Three fire engines from Hyndburn Community Fire Station attended the address and assisted the casualty at the scene.

There was slight fire damage to the kitchen.

Watch manager at Hyndburn Community Fire Station, Alex Fletcher, said people needed to be aware of kitchen safety.

He said: "People need to make sure that if they leave the kitchen they make sure all the appliances are switched off and the gas turned off."
